Happy Friday y’all! I hope you all are having a fantastic day!
This is the second installment of our four week series on how to detox your mindset of negativity! (find week one here!) I can’t wait to share it with you guys, so let’s jump right in!
As a recap, last week I challenged you to a negativity fast. I hope you took the challenge and are thriving! I know I saw huge changes, even after the first week!
This week I want to encourage all of you with a little positivity!
Positivity is a key component to keeping your mindset clear of negative thoughts. The message version of Philippians 4:8-9 says it this way:
“Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse.”
Paul says to fill your mind with the best, the beautiful, the truth. And he’s right. From my personal process of getting negativity out and positivity in, I can tell you that truth is the thing that has changed everything for me!
Here’s how it works for me. I have learned to ask God what He thinks about my situation. For example, I am in school as a pre-nursing major and it is no joke. Most days I leave school feeling defeated, depleted, and completely incapable. Those are all lies from the enemy and he makes them really easy to believe. But that’s not who I am. Jesus says that I am a nurse. He says that I have the ability to lay hands on the sick and see them healed. Jesus says that I am really smart and intelligent. I know that’s who I am, but after a long and hard day both emotionally and spiritually, the lies of the enemy are so tempting to believe.
So I have stared asking God what He thinks about my situation and who He says I am. And of course, I journal His response. It has been a game changer! Filling your mind with TRUTH is the most important part of this whole process! I really want to hit that home. The truth that Jesus speaks to you is who you really are! Jesus sees you as you are, not as you are not. We tend to see ourselves with all our faults and insecurities but Jesus sees us as who He has called us to be. He sees us at our full potential and helps us along the way until we reach that potential. That’s the process! And it is intensely beautiful!
Because I’m a huge fan of giving practical steps for everyday life, I want you give you a few tips and tricks on how to speak truth when you feel yourself starting to slip back into the familiarity of self criticizing.
- Get alone with God! This is HUGE! Every time I am having a less-than-perfect day, whether it’s just feeling a little down or the emotions are raging, I try to always make time to get alone with God. Being in his presence is so refreshing, even if it’s only five minutes!
- Learn who Jesus says you are! Ask Jesus who He thinks you are and then BELIEVE IT! Speak it over yourself until it sinks in and becomes your identity. Matthew 7:7 says, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find.” So ask God what He thinks about you! I’m willing to bet He’s expectantly waiting to tell you how beautiful you are to Him!
- SPEAK TRUTH! As I said before, speaking truth is so important. The more you speak truth over yourself, the more you will begin to believe it! When I start to feel the temptation to criticize myself, I go in my room, pull out my journal and read over myself the truth God has shown me. It changes my mood almost instantly! In case you’re stuck on where to start, I’ll give you my two favorite truths that I say over myself!
The first truth is something I wrote word-for-word that Jesus spoke to me. I pray that is revelatory for you too!
I love you. I am for you. It’s okay to feel, but bring your feelings and emotions to me. I will protect you. I won’t hurt you. I will never ignore you. I will never give up on you. You are important. You are valued. You are strong and capable. You are patient. You are beautiful. I will always provide for you. I promise, I will NEVER let you down. I am good and I have your best interest in mind. I don’t give second best; you are worth more than that. I died for you, remember?!
The second truth I love speaking over myself is simply a list I composed based on all the words Jesus spoke to me about who I am. It came out of a season where I was really feeling unworthy of a lot of things. These are the truths I learned through my time with Jesus. I wrote it in first person because I think it is a lot more personal and it gets in my spirit quicker that way.
I can do this.
I will not give up.
I am strong.
I am good enough.
I am worthy of God’s love.
I am worthy of other people’s love.
I am worth it.
I am worth time.
I am worth money.
I am kind.
I am smart.
I am lovable.
I am valued.
I am important.
I will not give up.
I can do this.
There you have it! These are some very real and practice steps that you can take when you’re feeling less than who Jesus says you are. Dive deep into His presence, learn what He thinks about you, and start speaking His truth over yourself! Remember, words have POWER! Choose to speak life!
I love you all so dearly and I pray that you would take these truths, make them your own, and gain a greater revelation of how much Father God loves you!
My best wishes for your journey to positivity! Come back next week as I talk about how to fight the real battles and WIN!
