“Love is your assignment.”
I heard this quote while listening to a sermon from Eric Johnson of Bethel church and it wrecked me in the best possible way! I then proceeded to listen to the sermon several times on repeat because it was so profound! (if you have a chance to look it up, DO IT! the sermon is titled Love is Your Assignment) He just throws out statement after statement of revelation! It changed my heart and the way I love people!
In his sermon, Johnson brilliantly put forward the idea that God doesn’t just know how to love, but that God is love. God is the definition of love. This lead me to think that, because we are made in God’s image, we have no choice but to love the way He loves. It’s not an option for us to choose who we love and who we hate. We are called to love everyone with a love like Jesus.
What does this mean? Well, it means asking Jesus to expand your capacity to love. It means catching yourself when you are about to unnecessarily judge someone and, instead of forming a premature prejudice, asking The Lord what he sees in that person and asking Him to help you see the same. It means loving beyond logic and reason. It means loving when the other person can’t offer you anything in return. Loving like Jesus means that, at all times, you have one eye on the Father and one eye on the person you’re loving so that you never lose sight of what Jesus sees in them. Loving like Jesus means you love the unlovable and serve the unservable. It means walking in a room and looking for the faces that are begging to be loved and loving them with all your heart. That is what loving like Jesus means.
I want to challenge you to go out of your way to love someone this week! Not just once, or twice, but every day. Be kind to someone who normally doesn’t receive kindness, serve someone who typically serves you, love with all your heart! I think we could all use more love-both on the giving and receiving end of things.
And let me assure you, I’m not perfect at loving everyone. I make mistakes all the time. I mess up too. But God has so much grace! Every morning is a chance for me to start over and do better than I did yesterday. So don’t get discouraged and give up because you messed up a couple times. Keep going until loving like Jesus loves becomes second nature! He always has grace for your process!
“The will of God for your life is actually less about you and more about the people around you. Love is your assignment.”
This, my friends, is a quote I try my hardest to live by! Why don’t you join me?!
